| This workshop is being offered concurrently with the Exhibition of Emily Mason and Wolf Kahn prints and illustrates the technique used by Emily Mason, originally shown to her by Anthony Kirk. Carborundum aquatint is a painterly intaglio technique in which the artist paints directly onto a Plexiglas plate with a mixture of carborundum grit and acrylic medium. Allowed to dry, the plate is then inked and wiped like an etching. By using a variety of grit, a printmaker can achieve a wide range of tones in the print. Participants will explore multiple plate registration methods that involve printing in color. Anthony Kirk, formerly head of the etching department at Tyler Graphics for 12 years, is currently the Artistic Director and Master Printer at CCP. He has collaborated with numerous major American artists and has taught at Manhattan Graphics, Parsons School of Design, Pratt Graphics, and other regional printmaking centers.
