Participants will learn intaglio techniques that are modeled after traditional intaglio techniques but with the health and safety aspect greatly improved. This approach to intaglio printmaking has been universally known as "Non-Toxic Printmaking" but because it includes modern ideas it is now being referred to as “Contemporary Printmaking'.  Many of the techniques require the same skills that are demanded of traditional printmaking but this contemporary approach facilitates painterly and spontaneous drawing skills as well. If you can draw or paint then these techniques will suite you. If you wish to work more with photographic or with computer-generated images then these techniques will work equally well. The great asset that this contemporary approach to intaglio printmaking has is the ease and speed that intaglio plates and images can be made. Plates can be made in as little as 20 minutes and yield editions of up to 75 prints. Plastic plates and AKUA water-based inks will be used. Open to all levels

Keith Howard is Head of Printmaking and Research at the Rochester Institute of Technology School of Art and is considered the foremost authority within the field of non-toxic intaglio printmaking. In the last decade he has delivered over 100 workshops and seminars on his contemporary intaglio printmaking innovations world-wide. His latest book, "The Contemporary Printmaker: Intaglio-Type and Acrylic Resist Etching" is considered the Contemporary Printmaking "Bible." Keith has also written two milestone publications on contemporary intaglio printmaking. The first book is entitled "Safe Photo Etching for Photographers and Artists" a 1991 production and "Non-Toxic Intaglio Printmaking".
