About the AIR Program

The Artist-in-Residence Program at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking offers established and emerging artists an opportunity to realize printmaking projects by providing time, privacy, equipment, and a creative environment. Artists who participate in the program live and work in the Helen Frankenthaler Printmaking Cottage, for one week or as long as one month.

The residency provides uninterrupted time to produce a body of work and a supportive atmosphere for creative growth and development in traditional and innovative printmaking techniques. Artists can create an edition, explore new mediums, or otherwise advance their printmaking oeuvre. Participants may work independently or in association with one of CCP’s printers, for an additional fee. A printmaking residency is an ideal opportunity for experimentation and collaboration. It is hoped that competition for the residency will stimulate original and inventive proposals for work that artists might not otherwise attempt.

Residencies are based in the Helen Frankenthaler Printmaking Cottage, next to CCP’s main facility. The cottage houses a printmaking studio as well as a compact, furnished, two-bedroom living space with a fully equipped kitchen, bath, and laundry. The building has central heat and air-conditioning and is wheelchair accessible.

Equipment in the cottage

The cottage contains a Takach motorized etching press (39" x 72") and a Martech manual etching press (28" x 48"). It has excellent light and plenty of wall space.

Resources in CCP’s main building

In various studios on two floors, CCP has six intaglio presses, a lithography press, a Vandercook press, an acid room, silkscreen equipment, a paper mill, a computer design lab, and exposure units for photoprintmaking. This building also houses the Grace Ross Shanley Gallery, which presents a full schedule of museum-quality exhibitions.

Master Printer

Anthony Kirk, CCP’s Artistic Director and Master Printer, was formerly head of the etching department at Tyler Graphics in Mt. Kisco, New York. He has collaborated with distinguished contemporary artists, including Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Frank Stella, and Donald Sultan. Artists-in-Residence can collaborate with Kirk or other printers. Public presentation: A component of the residency will be the presentation of the artist’s work to the public. For this purpose, CCP will sponsor one or more of the following: slide lectures and talks, informal exhibition of works in progress, informal open-studio visits, or a related workshop with young artists from the community.

Artist selection

CCP appoints a panel to review applications. Central to the application will be a description of your specific project, accompanied by a résumé/bio, visuals of recent work, and an application fee. Please see the application form in this brochure.

Fees

The fee is based on a weekly rate. CCP subsidizes a significant portion of the cost of the program, but there remains a fee to cover on-site housing, orientation, basic technical assistance, and some studio supplies. The fee for subsequent weeks is reduced. A reduction of fees may be available for two artists collaborating in the space, at the discretion of the reviewing panel. Please contact CCP for current rates. CCP will receive a commission of 50% for any of the artist’s works sold during the residency.
