Last year's mystery print is titled, Shaded Recursive Combs (second version) and is representative of James Siena’s recent prints, which employ an all-over, intricate sense of design and are structurally rhythmic and complex. The print also recalls Pre-Columbian, and tribal patterning as well as Islamic and African textile designs.
James Siena was born in California in 1957 and received his BFA from Cornell University. Siena’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including Daniel Weinberg in Los Angeles and Pace Wildenstein in New York, and over fifty five group exhibitions throughout the world including the 2004 Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial. The recipient of multiple honors and awards, Siena received an Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2000); the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award (1999); and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting (1994). Siena was an artist-in-residence at Yaddo in 2004 and 2007, and was recently elected a Director of Yaddo.. James Siena currently lives and works in New York City. |
