Moku Hanga: Japanese Water-Based Woodcut

APRIL VOLLMER

4-day workshop
Thursday - Sunday
March 12 - March 15, 2009
10 am - 4 pm
$400 plus $15 for materials

Moku means wood, and hanga can be translated as printmaking. This class will introduce contemporary artists to traditional Japanese woodblock printing, the same technique used by the Ukiyo-e artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. Moku hanga provides precise registration and great control over color and a connection to one of the most important chapters in the history of printmaking. Participants will cut and print a small edition of prints to learn about this nontoxic technique. We will begin with a discussion of a different aspect of Japanese woodblock, including tools, sharpening, printing technniques, and paper.

April Vollmer received her MFA in printmaking from Hunter College. She has exhibited widely and since 1995 has taught workshops at venues such as CCP, Lower East Printshop, Anderson Ranch, Pyramid Atlantic, the Women's Studio Workshop, Dieu Donné Papermill, the School of Visual Arts, Hunter College, and many other locations.
